I'm not usually one for shopping, especially not during the chaotic January sales. But this year, I decided to brave the crowds and see what all the fuss was about. I met up with my friend Rachel at the Trafford Centre, and we set off to explore the sales together. I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical at first – I'm not a fan of the manufactured urgency that comes with these kinds of events. But I was determined to keep an open mind and see if I could find any hidden gems.
As we made our way through the mall, I was struck by the sheer amount of stuff on offer. Everywhere we looked, there were signs screaming "SALE!" and "CLEARANCE!" and "BUY NOW!" It was overwhelming, to say the least. But I've always been a bit of a bargain hunter, and I was determined to find something that I actually wanted, rather than just buying something because it was cheap.
After a few hours of browsing, I finally found something that caught my eye – a beautiful linen shirt from COS, reduced from £49 to £17. It was a great price, and I loved the style, so I decided to treat myself. But aside from that one find, I have to say that I was underwhelmed by the sales. So much of what was on offer seemed to be low-quality, trendy pieces that would likely be out of style in a few months. And the prices, while discounted, still seemed steep for what you were getting.
My rule when it comes to sales is simple: if I wouldn't want it at full price, the sale doesn't make it make sense. I know it sounds a bit rigid, but I think it's a good way to avoid buying things that I don't really need or want. And let's be real, there's nothing worse than buying something on impulse, only to realize later that it's not really what you wanted.
As we left the mall and headed back to Manchester, I couldn't help but feel a bit ambivalent about the whole experience. On the one hand, I was happy to have found a great bargain, but on the other hand, I was disappointed by the lack of quality and substance in the sales. Maybe I'm just not a sales kind of person, but I think I'll stick to my usual approach – buying what I love, when I love it, regardless of the price.
