After finishing work at Earthen on a Tuesday afternoon, I decided to spend an hour exploring the Northern Quarter. The NQ is one of my favourite areas of Manchester – the street art, the independent shops, and the vibrant atmosphere all combine to create a unique and exciting experience.
My first stop was Afflecks, a iconic Manchester institution that's been around for decades. While it's not strictly a charity shop, it's a great place to find unique, one-off pieces and independent designers. I browsed through the various stalls, taking in the eclectic mix of clothing, accessories, and homeware.
Next, I headed to Cow Vintage, a fantastic charity shop that's always stocked with a wide range of donated items. I spent ages browsing through the rails, searching for that perfect find. And then, I spotted it – a beautiful silk scarf for £3. It's not a groundbreaking discovery, but it's a great addition to my accessories collection, and the price was unbeatable.
I also popped into Pop Boutique, another great charity shop in the area. While I didn't find anything that caught my eye, I love the layout of the store and the friendly staff. It's always worth a visit, even if you don't find anything to buy.
As I wandered around the NQ, I couldn't help but think about the area's gentrification. On the one hand, I love the new independent cafes and shops that have sprung up in recent years – Foundation Coffee House is a particular favourite of mine. On the other hand, I'm ambivalent about the changing face of the NQ – it's lost some of its edgy, alternative vibe, but it's gained a new level of sophistication and charm.
As I finished my hour in the NQ, I reflected on the changing nature of the area and the impact it's had on the local community. While it's not always easy to navigate the complexities of gentrification, I believe that the NQ has managed to strike a balance between old and new, preserving its unique character while embracing change. And as I walked back to the tram, scarf in hand, I felt grateful to have experienced the NQ in all its glory.
